The Empty House

A family of three, two daughters and a mother

Step out of the house for one of many times

But this time, it will be long before they return

The girls go on a trip, far away from home

Leaving behind the empty house

|

The empty house is now hollow and wide

This emptiness, this solitude, too unfamiliar

A new world of possibilities to see

Possibilities the house is too afraid to see

This new world is very strangle

The empty house has never seen such cold window panes

Or such dusty tiles along the floors

The empty house is surrounded by many household items, yet alone

Why are the people not back home?, it wonders

When will they come back?

The people are thinking of the empty house

|

The empty house feels inexplicably sad

For some reason, and yet, for no reason

It sheds tears down its roof as it rains a few nights

Why do I long to cry, the house ponders

Is it because it is in a new, strange environment?

Is it because it wants to return home?

Does it miss everything it left behind?

Crying comes from the empty house

|

The empty house is forced to spend time with others

The glass dishes that break easily and mess up the house

The squeaky floors that make annoying noise all over the place

The mice in the walls always bickering

The doors slamming themselves as if they’re the only ones there

All these household items the house never noticed before

And now, these items they’ve spent years with become their enemies

Annoying the empty house

|

The empty house has new adventures

New occasions to triumph

New parts of the neighborhood to explore

The garden, the backyard, the sky, and everything

Beautiful places its never seen

The empty house is filled with excitement

Yet it only gets to look at the garden and all of its flowers – the most popular attraction

So much time could’ve been exciting if not for it’s apathy

Instead of countless adventures, the house does nothing

Staying still and wondering why it couldn’t have the people in it

What makes this experience so special?

Placing boredom into the empty house

|

The empty house is never satisfied during the family trip

All of this give reasons as to why the people should return

Why this trip shouldn’t have happened in the first place

Why the empty house grows more sullen every day

And yet it can never identify how it feels

The empty house yearns for its people to return

To finally wash away feelings of despair and lethargy

The empty house sits in silence, wishing it were loud

Disappointing and upsetting the empty house

|

Finally, the empty house’s demands were met

The female family of three returned home

They welcomed the new, yet old house

Reminiscing on all their adventures in this very house

The empty house is proud to be full once more until remembering what it lost

It lost all those fun experiences visiting new places, even if it was only one

Even when it did nothing, it spent plenty of time relaxing

And while the other household items were annoying, they were a delight to get closer to

The full house realizes what joy it had during the trip

It wants another trip to happen, but for now, it would like the status quo

Rejoicing in the full house
