Six cruel hours of our lives
Five days a week
The trials and tribulations of note-taking, reading, testing, and more
Group projects were nightmares of unequally shared portions of work getting done
The stress of keeping our friends close and our enemies far away
It was finally over
Every pencil, marker, eraser, and note card had worn itself out
The bells ringing every hour
Until now.
Grades were finalized; I had passed once again
The bell rang once more
For a whole two months, we would be free
It was finally over

Spring is a season of rebirth
New things grew and people changed as the school year ended
Fall is a season of preparation
Hibernation and warmer clothes to prepare for the winter
Winter is a season of duality
A time to stay inside and be warm, or a time to go outside and play
Summer is a season of opportunity
The opportunities are endless
You may not like how warm it is, but come to appreciate the balance it brings
You have an infinite amount of opportunity in the summer
Act as though you will not have summer forever
Enjoy what you do as if it will last forever
|
You could go outside and appreciate the beauty of summer
Take a walk and see all the life around you
The simplicity of it all is something to admire
No one to yell at you, to overstimulate, to disappoint
In the words of Depeche Mode, “Enjoy the Silence”
|
Maybe even just sit outside on your front porch
Feel the sunlight shimmer onto you
See the blue skies mimicking the ocean and waving at you
Feel the air trying to play “tag” with you
See the grass as vibrant as the animals inhabiting it
See the animals all around
Their prime time of the year to survive, reproduce, and bring about the beauty of life
Each flower different from the other, hoping to be picked by you
|
Play a game or two, for you are still a child in need of growth
Kick and throw balls at each other until hitting someone’s teeth
Blow some bubbles and draw on the ground with some chalk
You’re not in school; let your imagination out of the prison of your mind
Your inner child will be pleased
Ride a bike so quickly you become afraid of stopping
Burn your butt after going down a metal slide
Swing so high on the swings that you are dared to jump off
Knowing it may be your last time
|
Come to the beach and embrace the summer at its finest
Rub your body in and succumb to the depths of the sand
Pale white or golden yellow, covered in pollution or crystal clear
It loves to follow you around and follow in your footsteps
The sand is the king of the beach until it crashes into the waves
Messy, yes, but full of adventure
Little fish, seaweed, stingrays, and turtles waiting for you to greet them
They run at first, only because they have yet to develop comfort around you
|
If not, try the pool
The chlorinated water promises to keep you warm
Only 12 feet are worth exploring, so try to touch the bottom
Take some laps and exert your body
Sometimes, a finite area challenges one to be creative
You could roleplay as mermaids, have pool noodle fights, and more
Until it is 4 PM and it’s time to dry off and head home
|
You have so much time to do so many things
I would practice the piano until my hands can identify every key by touch alone
I would dance until I can’t move my body
I would sing for the ages, for the people, for myself
I would write my heart out, finally having the chance to take my time
Be free with my work and allow my creativity to flow through
For summer is an experience that one should take advantage of
|
Summer is a gift that one should always love
Learn a new skill and explore it
I could get back into baking and create messy, yet delicious cakes
Each taste bud overloaded by the sensation of vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, or sprinkles
I could learn how to draw, setting up the career I dearly want
Each stroke becoming more important and detailed than the last
Test out a new game to play, online or in real life
Try to touch the sky if you can
|
See not only your world, but the world itself
There are many places waiting for memories to be made
Fly, drive, even take a boat
See the glory of the world and expand your horizons
France wants someone to climb its tower
Japan wants someone to buy from its shops
Egypt wants someone to see its wonderful, bright homes
See some family or friends from far away
|
Best of all, you can relax
Merely… sleep the summer away
If that’s what it means to make the most of it to you
There’s many other things you can do that I have yet to claim
That’s not the important part here
No matter what you do, make the most of it
